Slow food can be a quick way for aspiring producers to succeed.

Dozens of food artisans and small processing businesses are now part of a unique global effort to promote interest in healthy food that could also help save the planet.

She is affiliated with the International Slow Food Movement through her membership in the Taste Causeway Food and Drink Promotional Organization, which works with small companies and individuals to support their motivation and development goals. It also focuses on ethical tourism.

Flavor Causeway, located in Coleraine, was the first Irish organization to join the global slow food movement, led by local chef Paula McIntyre, a regional chair.

Paula’s Cookbook ‘Tips and Stories’

Taste Causeway, a collaborative network formed by Causeway Coast and Glens Council, is now Northern Ireland’s first recognized and internationally recognized slow food destination. The network organizes a program of activities that includes outdoor markets and mentoring sessions to help its member companies succeed and grow.

Taste Causeway was set up to provide handicraft reservations to a recent Dell National Trust for Annie Delight, based in Port Glennon.

Paula says the network of collaborations with local food businesses has been honored by the World Slow Food Movement after a rigorous evaluation process by the Slow Food Movement in Italy.

“Slow Food is a global organization dedicated to fostering good, clean and fair food,” continues Paula, author of a unique cookbook that suggests a series of creative recipes and stories by region’s slow food producers. ۔ She has also cooked local food at the famous Terre Madre Salone del Gusto Food Congress meetings held every two years in Turin.

The movement seeks to encourage people to reduce their consumption of fast food in large quantities, instead of spending time preparing and eating whole, locally sourced and seasonal foods, especially in the family environment. The focus is not only on nutrition but also on the preservation of culture and heritage as it involves reducing food and waste.

Taste Causeway member companies are expected to attend the congress this October. Northern Ireland’s executive ministers have also attended before the epidemic lockdown.

Leona Kane, chairman of Taste Causeway, has gone to Terre Madre, the owner of the hugely successful Broiler Gold Rapeseed Oils in Lemvadi. She says: “The Congress is a very impressive occasion with its food exhibitions. It’s great to see Taste Causeway join an organization with such international respect. To restore interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us.

The membership of Test Causeway is also supported by Tourism NI. Gary Quett, Tourism NI’s Food and Drink Experience Development Officer, added: “Slow Food Causeway offers visitors a unique opportunity to embrace the Causeway Coast and Glenz’s wonderful food and beverage offerings.

“With a fabulous array of fresh local ingredients, passionate producers, award-winning chefs and dynamic distillers and brewers, Slow Food Causeway will provide visitors with an exciting program of unique dining experiences in the region’s rich backdrop.”

Flavor also works with Causeway Food NI, a local food promotional body.

Slow Food was originally founded in the 1980s by a group of Italian activists defending regional traditions, good food, a happy stomach and the slow pace of life. Since then, it has become a global movement of millions of people in more than 150 countries, combining local food enjoyment with community and environmental engagement.

The new Slow Food Cookbook, endorsed by both Slow Food and Test Causeway, is inspired by the collaboration, which Paula describes simply as “an alliance that enhances individual success.”

She continues: “Taste Causeway was born out of a conversation, an ambition and a small group of like-minded people who have a passion for their local heritage and their place in the world, who are community, culture, local and responsible.
